The global microelectronics landscape is undergoing a profound transformation: geopolitical rivalries, such as the competition between the United States and China over semiconductor supremacy, have reshaped international trade frameworks, investment patterns, and research collaborations, creating both challenges and opportunities for new players in the global arena.

This session examines how these shifts in the microelectronics sector are reconfiguring global value chains, innovation ecosystems, and strategic alliances and patterns of technology development.

Drawing on preliminary findings from the ITIR–CHIP.IT Observatory on Global Microelectronics Dynamics, the session explores Italy’s evolving role within the European semiconductor strategy and the broader implications for research institutions and industrial stakeholders.
